DESCRIPTION:Many organizations consistently post on social media\, send newsletters\, and promote events\, yet still struggle with low attendance\, poor online engagement\, and outreach fatigue. During periods of burnout\, staffing shortages\, and funding cuts\, communication efforts can easily become reactive\, inconsistent\, or disconnected from the communities organizations hope to reach. \nThis workshop explores practical social media and communication strategies that help organizations increase visibility\, strengthen trust\, and improve participation without relying on constant content production or overextending staff and volunteers. Participants will examine common outreach mistakes\, audience engagement patterns\, messaging strategies\, and low-cost promotional approaches that support more sustainable community engagement. \nObjectives\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify common communication barriers that reduce community participation during periods of burnout\, low staffing\, and funding cuts\nAnalyze how messaging\, timing\, accessibility\, and audience targeting influence attendance\, trust\, and participation\nExplore low-capacity social media and outreach strategies that support sustainable engagement without relying on constant content production\n\nThis workshop is no cost to HSF Members\n \nBio \nYsabel Garcia is a communications strategist and public health professional leading outreach campaigns\, engagement strategies\, and public-facing communications for nonprofits\, advocacy organizations\, and public health initiatives. She has coordinated multi-channel social media campaigns that generated thousands of views for public education campaigns\, increased attendance at large-scale community events\, and engaged audiences across the United States and internationally. Her work also includes independently building a mental health communications and education platform that gained national and international recognition\, including an invitation to the White House. \nOver the last decade\, she has facilitated trainings on cultural humility\, mental health\, and leadership development\, including serving as a trainer for the Human Service Forum’s Supervisory Skills Certificate Training Program. \nYsabel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Child Psychology and a Master’s degree in Public Health\, grounding her work in human behavior\, systems thinking\, and social context. \n  \nHSF Annual Sponsors:

Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism\, which argued in 1951 that the machinery of modern life was reshaping the very fundamentals of human existence\, Lepore\, profoundly disturbed by the technology revolution and by the soulless inundation of artificial intelligence\, unfurls a new history for our own twenty-first century. \nBuilding on an essay in The New Yorker in 2024\, Lepore’s clarion call traces our increasing dependence on and strangulation by data. Political campaigns\, awash in an avalanche of fake bots\, have been reduced to attention-mining algorithms\, while multinational media corporations dictate public discourse\, and the era of the liberal nation-state seems to be coming to a rapid end\, replaced by billionaire technocrats reliant on autocracy and the tools of AI. \nWith Orwellian overtones\, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State demonstrates how technology has corroded global democracy\, leading to the destruction of both human community and capacity for self-government\, creating a new form of AI government\, a digital citizen’s assembly\, where AI will recommend the course of action to humans in place of human-run legislatures. Especially sobering with this proliferation of “dizzying\, ever-changing schemes\, prophesies\, and predictions” is that the Artificial State has come at the expense of the natural world\, leading to catastrophic loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity. \nDeliberately alarming\, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State\, despite its abundance of dire facts\, is not a funeral dirge; rather\, it’s an inspiring wake-up call\, written in Lepore’s typically elegiac prose\, which demonstrates that nothing about the Artificial State was inevitable\, for it is a “government without consent\, even government without humans.” It can\, Lepore asserts\, be dismantled. Other heinous systems\, like feudalism\, fascism\, and slavery\, have also been dismantled\, but disassembly requires identifying the parts\, tracing the sources. It requires telling a new history. This is the purpose of The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State. \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University\, professor of law at Harvard Law School\, and a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her many books include the New York Times bestsellers These Truths and We the People.
